POLICE AND YOUR RIGHTS

What you should do when:-

POLICE STOP YOU
1) Not in uniform,
ask for identification
Say: “please, show me your Police Authority Card”
2) Police Athority Cards
Red colour: Suspended Police Officer. He has no authority to do anything to you. Walk away.
Other colours:
· Blue coulour: Rank of Inspector and above
· Yellow colour: Below the rank of inspector
· White colour: Police reserve
Note his name and ID number
3) In Uniform
Note his name and ID number on his uniform
4)Police vehicle
Note the number plate of the patrol car of motorcycle
POLICE QUESTION YOU WHEN STOPPED
1)Your identification
Only give your name, ID card number and address
2)The police ask other questions
Politely ask “Am I under arrest?”
3)When are you under arrest
You are arrested if the Police:-
· tells you “yes’
· do not allow you to leave/want to take you to the Police station; or
· hancuff you.
If you are under arrest, you may walk away/refuse to follow him back to the Police station or anywhere else. If asked.
4) When you cannot be arrested
The Police cannot arrest you just because you are a potential witness and want to take a statement from you (112/Witness Statement)

QUESTIONING BY POLICE WITHOUT ARREST
1) 112/Witness Statement
When the Police are investigating a case and think you have information/knowledge about the case, the Police may examine you and take down your answer (112/Winess Statement)
2) Informal/Formal Request
Most time, the Police make an informal request that you give a 112/Witness Stament. If the place and time is conveninet to you, cooperate. If not, tell the Police you will do so at a convenient place and time.
If you completely refuse to cooperate, the Police can issue a formal order in writing signed by an investigating officer (police Order) to ask you to cooperate.
If you disobey a Police order, you cannot be arrested. However it is an offence and the police may request the Magistrate to issue a warrant against you to compel you to cooperate
3) Giving a 112/Witness Statement
You have the right to ask a lawyer to accompany you. This is advisable.
In giving a 112/Witnes Statement, you may refuse to answer any question/remain silent if the answer is likely to expose you to a criminal offence
▪ bring along a note book or writing paper with you (personal notes)
▪ Write down every question asked in your Personal Notes
▪ Make sure you understand every question asked.
▪ Take you time and think carefully before writing your answers in your Personal Notes
▪ Read your answers to the Police Officer questiong you
▪ Keep your Personal Notes for future reference.
4) Signing your 112/Witness Statement
Before signing your statement, read the questions and your answers written by the Police officer carefully.
▪ Compare the Statement you are asked to sign with your Personal notes
▪ You have the right to make any corrections/changes to the Statement before signing
▪ Sign your signature immediately below the last setence of your statement.
POLICE ARREST YOU
1) Ask: “why am I under arrest?”
An arrest is unlawful if you are not informed of the reason.
2) Do not resist an arrest
The Police have the right to use reasonable force to arrest you if you resist
3) Ask : “Which Police station are you taking me to?”
The arresting Police officer must immediately take you to the nearest Police station and no other place.
4) What to do when arrested
You have the right to make a telephone call
Call your family or friend or lawyer of the Legal Aid Centre (LAC) inform:-
▪ You have been arrested
▪ the time, place and reason of the arrest
▪ the identity of the Police Officer; and
▪ the Police station you will be taken to
5) What happens after arrest
You may be detained up to 24 houser
▪ at the Police station, or
▪ in a lock-up to “assist” police Investigation
YOUR RIGHTS AFTER ARREST & DURING DETENTION
1) Right to contact Lawyer
You may have the right and should insist to contact/see your lawyer
2) Clothing
You are allowed to have one set of clothing on you in the lock-up
3) Personal Belongings
The Police must record and put all your personal belongings in safe custody
Your personal belongings must be returned to you upon release
4) Welfare
You are allowed to take bath two times a day
If you are sick, you have the right to receive immediate medical attention
You are to be given proper and adequate food and water during detention
5) How long can the police detain you
The Police can only detain you up to 24 hours for investigation
The duty of the police is to complete the investigation within 24 hours and to release you as soon as possible.
If the Police cannot complete investigation within 24 hours, the Police must bring you before a Magistrate for a remand order to extend you detention beyond 24 hours (“Remand Order”).

REMAND ORDER BY MAGISTRATE AFTER ARREST
1)Who is Magistrate
A Magistrate is a judicial officer, He/She has power to make a Remand Order to detain you for more than 24 hours.
2) Purpose of a Remand Order
It is to give more time to the Police to complete their investigation and decide whether there is evidence to charge you for an offence
The Police cannot ask for a Remand Order only for the purpose of taking a statement from you.
3) How long is a remand order
When the Police bring you before a Magistrate for a Remand Order, the police must give reasons to the Magistrate why it is necessary to detain you beyond 24 hours. The Magistrate’s duty is to consider carefully the reasons given by the police.
The Police will usually ask for a further detention of 14 days or less
The Magistrate, after careful consideration of the reasons given by the police, has discretion:
▪ not to make a Remand order; or
▪ make a reman order for a period shorter than that asked by the Police
The Police can make more than one applicaton for a remand order. Altogether, you cannot be detained longer than 15 days.
4) What to say when you are brought before a Mgistrate for remand
Tell the magistrate
▪ you want legal represenatation and to contact the LAC and your family;
▪ you want medical treatement because you are sick or have been beaten;
▪ If the Police had treatened or beaten you during your detention;
▪ If you had been denied proper food/water/clothing, toilet or necessary medical treatment attention during you detention.
▪ whether the Police had carried out any investigation during your detention.
5) Ask for a shorter remand Order from the Magistrate
Before the Magistrate makes the Remand Order, ask for a shorter remand period asked by the Police. Give reasons (Examples: I will co-operate with the Police in their investigation”, “I wil be availale” etc)
BODY SEARCH WITHOUT ARREST
1) When can this be done
If you are at a place (examples: karaoke/clubs/entertainement outlets) where the Police are conducting a raid or looking for something (example:drugs), the Police may search your body/bags without arresting you.
This must be done in the presence of a Police Officer who is an inspector or of a higer rank.
2) What to do
▪ Do not allow the Police officer to put his hands into your pockets or bags
▪ Volunteer to empty your pockets/bags in his presence so you can see all your belongings
▪ Take out your belongings one by one. Each time, say “purse”, “keys”, “ID card”, etc.
▪ When your pockets/bags are empty, turn your pockets/bags inside out.
3) Your rights
▪ A female can only be body searched by a female Police officer
▪ All body searches must be caried out with decency (Example: cannot touch your private parts).
▪ There is no law requiring you to strip naked.

BODY SEARCH UPON ARREST
1) When Police can do so
▪ The police have power to search your body for any object relating to the suspected offence.
▪ The body search must be conducted in a confined place. It is your right to be bodily searched in private.
2) Strip search
Even when arrested, there is no law allowing the Police to force you to strip naked.
If you are forced to strip naked/threatened if you do not strip naked:
▪ Protest
▪ remember the Police Offocer’s name
▪ Lodge a Report after the incident
QUESTIONING BY POLICE AFTER ARREST
1) Identity of the Police officer questioning you
Note the name/rank of the Police Officer questioning you.
2) Right to remain Silent
The Police officer will first make friendly conversation/talk (example: ask you about The Police officer will first make friendly conversation/talk (example: ask you about our family and friends, etc) be polite. Do not afraid to remain silent. This is your right
3) Police want a written Statement (113 Statement) from you.
The Police Officer will ask you questions and then write down your answers. You are only obliged to give your full name, age, address and occupation (personal particulars).
Other than giving your personal particulars, you have the right to remain silent.
If you choose the right to remain silent, say “I will answer in Court”.
4) Police cannot force you to make 113 Statement.
After giving your personal particulars, and the Police officer wants you to say more things by threatening or forcing you into making a written statement:
▪ stay calm and remain silent;
▪ the police officer has no right to threater, beat ot force you into making a written statement.
If you have been threatened, beaten or forced, lodge a police report against the Police Officer ar first oppurtunity. This is your right.
5) If you wish to give 113 Statement
Follow the steps in point No. 3 and 4 of paragraph 3.
If you do not have a notebook/writing paper, request from the Police officer.
6) Your 113 Statement can/wil be used as evidence against you in Court to prove:
▪ You have admitted/confessed to the criminal offence as charged; or
▪ you have admitted/confessed certain facts that tend to show you are guilty of the offence as charged.

Pudding (Agar-Agar)


Ingredients:-
50 gms of Agar-Agar strands-soaked for 5 minutes
300 gms sugar
2 litres water
4 screwpine leaves-washed and knotted
few drops of colouring (2 colours)
Method:-
1. Boil agar-agar in water until it dissolves
2. Add screwpine leaves and cook for 5 to 10 minutes
3. Add sugar and stir until dissolves. Remove screwpine leaves.
4. Reduce the flame. cook over slow heat.
5. Meanwhile, remove half (measure approximately) of the mixture and set aside
6. Colour each portions with a few drops of different food colourings
7. Pour the green colour portion into rinsed mould . chill
8. Followed by red colour portion and chill it for 10 minutes.
9. Cut into diamond shape and serve

Nutrition During Pregnancy

A balanced, nutritious diet is an important aspect of a healthy pregnancy. It is not a matter for eating more or "eating for two"; your energy requirement do not double just because you are pregnant. However, your body will require more of certain key nutrients i.e. Folate, Gangliosides (GA), Sialic Acid (SA), Essential Fatty Acids (EFA), Calcium, iron and others to support a healthy pregnancy.
Folate
Also called as Folic Acid or Vitamin B9. Leafy vegetables such as spinach, turnip greens, lettuces, dried beans and peas, fortified milk and cereal products, sunflower seeds and certain other fruits and vegetables are rich sources of folate.
Folate is essential for growth and division of cells in both mother and unborn baby. Division of cells occur rapidly in developing baby to for important organs such as brain. Folate helps to maintain the growth and development of the foetus. As our body is unable to store Folate, it is therefore important to obtain Folate from our daily diet.
Gangliosides (GA)
GA is a type of fat which is highly concentrated in the brain. GA helps with brain cell connections. More brain cell connections lead to faster learning. research shows that GA may enhance learning ability and memory retention.
Sialic Acid (SA)
SA is highly concentrated in the central nervous system, especially the brain and in the celebral cortex (memory area)
Essential Fatty Acids (EFA)
Some of the food sources of fatty acids are fish and shellfish, flaxseed(linseed). hemp oil, soya oil, soya oil, canola (rapeseed) oil, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, leafy vegetables, and walnuts.
Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) are particularly important during pregnancy because your body cannot make these fatty acids; nor can your baby. EFA such as linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid are the precursor of DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and AA (Arachidonic acid). DHA and AA are the building blocks of brain and eyes. Therefore, it is important that EFA be present in your daily diet.
Calcium
Dairy products, such as milk and cheese, are a well-known source of calcium. Other than that, seaweeds; nuts and seeds (like almonds and sesame); beans; oranges; figs; okra ; broccoli; and fortified products such as orange juice and soy milk contains calcium.
Calcium is essential for building strong bones and teeth for your baby as well as for yourself. To ensure the sufficiency of calcium during pregnancy, your body absorbs 50% more calcium than usual especially in the first 6 months. If you are not getting enough calcium from your diet, your body will get the calcium from your stores i.e. bones, thereby reducing your bone mass.
Low intakes of calcium during pregnancy may also cause muscles spasm while adequate intakes of calcium during pregnancy may help to reduce having high blood pressure caused by pregnancy. it is important to make sure you are getting enough calcium throughout your pregnancy.
Iron
Good sources of dietary iron include red meat, fish, poultry, lentils, beans, leaf vegetables, tofu, chick peas, black eyed peas, potatos with skin and bread made from completely whole-grain flour. Iron in meat is more easily absorbed than iron in vegetables but heme/hemoglobin from red meat has effects which may increase the likelihood of colorectal cancer (source wikipedia).
During pregnancy, you need for iron almost doubled. iron is needed to built red blood cells that help to carry oxygen around the body and to your unborn baby. It is important to have sufficient iron stored before you embark upon a pregnancy.

Spicy Rasam

ரசம்


Ingredients:-

1 tbsp tamarind pulp
1 clove garlic (pounded)
1 tsp black mustard seeds
1 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp ground cummin
1 tsp ground aniseed
1/2 tsp ground fenugreek
22 tsp turmeric powder
4 cups cold water
2 tsps salt
1 medium size tomato (cut in to small)
3 tsp oil
8 sprigs curry leaf
3 dried red chillies (cut each in to half)
1 medium size onion (sliced fine)
pinch of Asafoetida powder (available in supermarket)


Method:-

1. Squeeze out tamarind juice and strain.
2. Heat oil in a deep pan and fry black mustard seeds, onion, garlic and dried red chillies till golden
3. Add black grounded pepper, cummin, anuseed and fenugreek and curry leaf till fragrant and crackling.
4. Add turmeric powder and Asafoetida powder, followed by chopped tomato and mix well
5. Add strained tamarind juice and 4 cups water. Bring to the boil.
6. Add salt to taste and serve hot.

My Hubby's Business Trip to Libya























Libya is officially know as The Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa. The Capital, Tripoli is where my husband stayed for almost 6 months. The climate is mostly dry and desert-like in nature, totally different from Malaysia. The temperature can be extereme sometimes, Just imagine, at night the temperature could reach up to -3 celcius. The main language spoken in Libya is Arabic, which is also the official language. It seems he had very difficult time to cummunicate with the local Libyans.
Basically, if you are planning to go Libya, it cost you around RM 4K for flight and extra 5K + for accomodation and food. Trust me, it will be full of excitement with the different environment, different people and different whether of course.
Best time to Visit

The best time to visit Libya is between November and March, when daytime temperatures are relatively mellow...for a desert country. Avoid travellling in late spring (May through June) and early fall (October), when the country's subject to the massive ghibli sandstorms from the south, which tend to last several days and interrupt all outdoor activities.

Caution

While security in Libya is generally good, tensions in the Middle East remain high. Travellers should keep abreast of international events that might have repercussions in Libya, and avoid political gatherings and demonstrations whenever possible. Travelling with a guide or in groups is recommended in remote areas. The regions bordering Chad and Sudan should be avoided.

Visa

Everyone except visitors from some Arab countries and Malta must have a visa to visit Libya. Nationals of Israel are not admitted. Before applying for a visa, you must have your passport translated into Arabic. Visas are only issued to visitors travelling as part of an organised tour.
